چکیده

The recent discovery of a very high degree of linear polarization in the prompt emission of GRB 021206 (Coburn & Boggs 2003) has suggested that synchrotron emission may play a dominant role in the production of the prompt γ-ray photons. We here show that, under certain geometrical conditions, an even higher level of linear polarization is expected if the photons are produced by bulk inverse Compton scattering. We discuss the probability of realizing such geometrical conditions showing that, for a particularly bright burst as GRB 021206, the detection of polarization at the first attempt in the Compton drag scenario is not unlikely.

Compton-dragged Gamma-Ray Bursts Associated with Supernovae.

It is proposed that the gamma-ray photons that characterize the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts are produced through the Compton-drag process, which is caused by the interaction of a relativistic fireball with a very dense soft photon bath. If gamma-ray bursts are indeed associated with supernovae, then the exploding star can provide enough soft photons for radiative drag to be effective. T...

Polarization in Gamma-Ray Bursts Produced by Pinch Discharge

Large-voltage and high-temperature plasma columns produced by pinch discharge can generate γ-ray flashes with energy spectra and spectral evolution consistent with that observed in γ-ray bursts (GRBs). The inverse Compton scattering (ICS) during the discharge process can produce high linear polarization. The calculation indicates that the observed polarization depends on the angle between the o...

Emission Processes in Gamma–ray Bursts

Recent results of the hectic research activity about gamma–ray bursts will be reviewed, with emphasis about the emission processes at the origin of the observed γ–rays. The conventional synchrotron shock scenario is found to have problems, due to the very short cooling times of the emitting electrons, which implies a predicted spectrum, Fν ∝ ν −1/2, much steeper than what is observed. It is the...

X-ray Polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts

The degree and the temporal evolution of linear polarization in the prompt and afterglow emission of gamma-ray bursts is a very robust diagnostic of some key features of gamma-ray bursts jets and their micro and macro physics. In this contribution, I review the current status of the theory of polarized emission from GRB jets during the prompt, optical flash, and afterglow emission. I compare th...

Gamma-Ray Burst Polarization: Limits from RHESSI Measurements

Using the RHESSI satellite as a Compton polarimeter, a recent study claimed that the prompt emission of GRB021206 was almost fully linearly polarized. This was challenged by a subsequent reanalysis. We present an novel approach, applying our method to the same data. We identify Compton scattering candidates by carefully filtering events in energy, time, and scattering geometry. Our polarization...
